This week have been very fortunate to find myself serving food to a Jerez de Frontera native. As my Spanish is stronger when I talk about food and sleeping arrangements drink not really but I thought to myself lets talk about Sherry. It was a very enlightening conversation. Apparently here in Spain Sherry is a great social reveller , drunk by everyone from the highest to the lowest in the land. The Spanish way with Sherry is to drink it all the time. Its not aperitif in Spain, it’s a drink that accompanies fish, poultry, beef desserts in fact it’s a “todo” drink. If you are a red wine fan you might not go this far.

He tells me that if you are a church fan there is what is called a “post church” tapas crawl. Here is how it goes; leave church or if not a fan of church “leave office/home” bump into your friend Miguel.. Mig to you, retire to the nearest tapas bar and order a Fino. This means a nicely chilled bottle. While you sip the stuff you talk about politics, football, women, men you name it. The tapas vary from Serrano Jamon, cheese, olives, omelettes, dried pig’s skin or something of that sort and my favourite a dish of sizzling squid with perejil y ajo. Before you know what has happened the bottle of Fino is gone.

You move on to the next tapas bar and now Mig orders another bottle of Fino and you carry on like this till “Mig” remembers that his wife said lunch could be as early as two today. So you polish off some chocolate pudding of sorts with a glass of Pedro Ximenex. A perfect A la Carte Lunch in my book. You then take a snooze and sympathise with Mig who is now tackling a five course lunch with his wife at home.

As the guests arrive and all the gifts if any have been unpacked and passed (blame ryanair) You have made endless jugs of something that resembles sangria or tinto verano and tried to feed them your version of the healthy mediterreanean diet. Suddenly it dawns on you that they are still with you for 10 more days and all the fun that you thought you had lined up for them is done and dusted in two days you wonder what to do with next. Don't wonder any more by just driving up into the mountains (that is a distraction in itself) come and enjoy a lesurely lunch or stay over with us. That will drastically reduce the time that you wonder about what to do with your guests. Lets us remove that "what to do and where to go" question for a few hours.

After the cucumber scare and my case anything that grows in the ground or is classified as fruit or veg I thought my meat eating days were back in full throttle. I just wanted that excuse to go and give the doctor so that she can put me on a meat especially red meat highway again. I imagined walking into the medical centre and saying in my Spanglish, “lo siento pero no puedo continuar con sus instrucciones de no comer carne, porque si la presión de la sangre me puede conseguir por lo menos tenemos la píldora, pero los pepinos y sus amigos de campo están en un camino guerra a muerte y prefiero morir con un filete en mi la boca de un pepino.

The joys of country life are countless. We don't have to deal with traffic as in cars or humans. But when summer approaches everyone wants to share our far flung zone and this weekend was one of them. From a group of young Spanish cycling enthusiasts who had cycled 23kms to come and sample casa joya’s delights and dip in the pool to fairly conservatives who just wanted to eat and enjoy the gardens. The Spanish party in a different way and that is my kind of partying where during a 3 course lunch the girls go topless in the pool and come back for their desserts. Its not an everyday occurrence but it has driven me into a frenzy of wanting to shade a few kilos here, there and everywhere so that I can shamelessly one day go topless (hahaha). Yes its here and its promising to be a hot one just how I like it in the shade of cause.

Now my that my daughter is doing her exams I find myself revising with her. Took me back to when I was at school. Very unpleasant thoughts I say. What is it about school that as children we hate so much and as adults we force our own children to like school. Having said that reading and discussing the 1st & 2nd WW was quite interesting created a huge debate where many points had to be cross checked using google as non of us was going to agree with the other person. Luckily work was starting in 3 hours otherwise a WW3 will have started with either one of us three invading the other one's territory and the odd one out having to take sides as there would have been no room for sitting on the fence.

Who gets stopped by the Guardia @ 9am on a quiet road? Me! Thank god I had not spend the first part of the night before with Beef Eater followed by his cousin Rioja. The carretera de Santa Maria de Nieva is a quiet road. You can guarantee that on a Monday morning Miguel wont be there driving on the wrong side of this narrow windy road. But for the Guardia traffico to be parked in the trees that was not a good start of my weekend (starts Sunday night). I stopped obviously, bear in mind that Iwas going into the village to order some tyres for the car that I was driving which now looked like the belly of a snake not that I have analysed one. James had pointed out how worn they were, suppose cause of the way I take corners..

Anyway back to the Guardia I thought if my front tyres just go past them they won't look. Politely they asked for my ID (Spanish One) which I did not have on me because now we have the A4 paper certificate instead of the cute plastic ones and forgot to photcopy it . I shook my head hands on my face and exclaimed "Madre Mia" mi certificado es in mi casa, visions of hundreds of euros flashed in front of me. I looked pleadingly at the officer and he said "documentos de coche" I was now in a state couldnt even open the glove compartment but eventually we did. The log book being in James's name he pointed at me "James Rice". Me "No soy Mary Rice". Now confusion kicks in then I remember the car insurance is in my name and I pass the documents across. I am left to continue with my journey to the garage and in a small village like Velez Rubio on that particular Monday morning I kept seeing the police everywhere. I felt I was the hunted, I returned home via the ramblas just in case. Now I have my knew tyres I can drive anywhere as long as I have not spend time the Beef Eater or Rioja.

At the end of it all with all the sand and cement off loaded suddenly he was not going anywhere. La Losilla for all its unspoilt beauty doesn’t really like the intrusion that is brought about by the modern world. In the dry season when nature is unhappy all ye can descend on us but when nature is oh so sweet, fog, rain, snow then La Losilla is like saying all you outsiders don’t come down we are busy being beautiful. So for the next few days monster Truck will be ensconced at Casa Joya until Mother Nature says yes.

I love the rain especially here in Almeria where the terrain is the sister of the Arizona Desert. The problem is that getting out La Losilla in the car become a jit jive with the mud. Last Sunday 21st March was a clear example of how nature can do it own thing. Guests arrived at Casa Joya to have their Sunday Lunch. Small car and mud uphill is just a No No. We went ahead of them in our Beast (Nissan Navara). All was well until we got to the sloppy bit and the baby car got stuck. So what does chef James do? get his wife to reverse back and whala we hook Beast to Baby and chef James takes over as wife is a wee bit scared of towing a car round the bend.

Beast Navara without a sweat dragged the little rugged car as if it was a baby doll. Now I me thinks this was money well spent on Beast. Sorry we missed you before we left on Friday evening, you really should have come out from the kitchen and taken the applause!

What a great menu and executed with your usual culinary genius. Great choice of dishes with a special mention for the bread (can I have the recipe)and the livers.

Thanks to both of you for a great evening (not forgetting the waitress!).

There will only be 2 of us now but the booking is firm. There is no way that I would come out to Spain and not come to Casa Joya.

We were at Mick's birthday lunch yesterday and just wanted to say what a wonderful meal it was. We thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't need to eat again once we got home. The journey back to the tarmac road was interesting, to say the least.

We look forward to another visit soon,

Almond Blossom

Now the winds seem to have died down the almond blossom looks fantastic. The flowers mile upon mile hugging the mountains and the ramblas what a sight to behold. The weather up here is ruthless. Saturday Night no lights thank the high priestess we had bought some gas lights and our dining guests enjoyed their candle lit dinner and no music only nature whistling around the house and through some cracks and crevices.

We have been waiting for the elctrician to come since July 2009 to put a few cables here and there. Everytime we have had an encounter with him it has always been "mañana". There are is a limit of "mañanas" one can take really and I am done with them, so the solution was cheap James did it and it was free not 12€ per hour. I hope I won't see that campo boy again

We might live far from the madding crowds but we are the mad ones I finally admit. Opposites attract that is the general probably scientific belief but I believe in "like minded people hooking up". Having known my husband for 10years 21/7/98 meeting in Covent Garden London then I only knew 7 wonders of the world but he makes the 8th. Nearly everyday is an adventure that can be hair raising or hair curling. One day we had two guests arrive wanting to have lunch, although we were only opening for the evening meal my husband being a good hearted chef prepared some lunch for the two. As I was out doing business in town on my return I enquired about the car in our car park and where the owners were. My husband straight faced explained that he had just prepared lunch for the two but they also wanted to have a siesta before heading back to civilisation.

I was flabbergasted as I had images of our quiet rural guesthouse being turned into USA style motel knocking shop. I was given 5€ though by our guests as a thank you for letting them use our rooms for a well deserved siesta. Little then did we know that they were to tell their friends that at Casa Joya you can have lunch and have a siesta thrown in for a good measure. Luckily this time I was around to say that we do not have a room free. Have I turned down a good business opportunity here what with the credit crunch??

Call Me Sponge Bob's Mum/Llamame Madre de Spong Bob

My daughter "Sponge Bob" is fluent in another language in Spanish which has now almost become her first language proud as I am for her I feel left out. When she comes up with jokes that when they are translated into English don't sound so funny has made me determined to work hard on my Spanish. Have also realised that some of the jokes involove a lot of rude words and am just loving that. Take for instance my favourite bookshop owner he says some incredible things that sometimes I have to write down and look up in the dictionary later. On my monthly prigrimage to the village market I popped into the bookshop with Sponge Bob and the proprietor started conversing with us wanting to know how we are surviving the cold up in the hill.

After such nice pleasantaries that wouldn't make a Pope blush he commented on how Sponge Bob was doing at school as he has bags of experience with teenager girls having two himself. As sponge bob is now into makeup he commented on this as nothing escapes him. Suddenly with a straight face he said watchout for the queue of boys coming to your house and they piss at the door. When Sponge Bob comes back from school will get the proper translation

Boots & Muddy Fields

Country life especially if you are a foreigner is always full of drama. As much as this place is stupendous I have to say it don't I? All it takes is a bit of rain and we are stuck. Our clients are used to being picked up at the top of the hill and driven down by us down to the restaurant because the Muddy Fields that are normlly a nice "Camino" during the rest of the year become impassible in a small car.

Back to Boots & Muddy Fields. I get in the truck 4x4 to go pick the guests for lunch . Am dressed in Boots as one does as appearances matter when one is serving food. Round the bend I swerve and the truck gets stuck in the mud. Chef is in the kitchen waiting for the first table to arrive only they wont be arriving in time because I have to now abandon the car and leg it across the field to our neighbours' to seek help in my beautiful boots that have since lost their beauty.

Still it a pleasure being the "Morena of La Losilla" Thats what the locals call me "The dark one of La Losilla" For I am black.
